Hostas (Starters)

Hostas (Starters)

Hosta or hostas are the most popular, low maintenance, shade tolerant plant in North America! Hostas come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, colors, and are quite disease and pest free. The pictures on our site are often of mature plants. Perennials can take 3 to 5 years to fully mature and exhibit their final colors, texture and form. Many plants have seasonal color or can change color based upon growing conditions. Thus, the starter plants you receive may not match all of the pictures but will with maturity.

Buy Hostas - How to choose the right hosta for you!

Are you a new gardener/new to hostas?

HostasDirect frequently offers a Beginner’s Luck Bundle, a selection of plants designed to be hardy, grow fast, and display a variety of colors, sizes, and textures.  We also recommend all the American Hosta Society Top Rated Hostas and American Hosta Growers Association Hosta of the Year recipients.  See the list at our Top Rated Hostas Page.

For an overview of the benefits of growing Hostas, visit our Hosta Benefits Information Page.

For a slideshow of important Hosta information, visit our Hostas: Everything You Need To Know Slideshow, which includes history, planting and care information, pest and disease ID & treatment, gardening tips, photos, and more!

Are you looking for a specific color to add to your garden?

We have Green Hostas, Blue Hostas, Yellow/Gold Hostas, as well as Green Margin Hostas, Blue Margin Hostas, Yellow Margin Hostas, and White Margin Hostas.  HostasDirect  also offers Green Center Hostas, Blue Center Hostas, Yellow Center Hostas, and White Center Hostas

The main Hosta colors of Green, Blue, and Yellow are complementary (across the Color Wheel) to Red, Orange, and Purple respectively.  Consider planting them with their complementary colors!

The main Hosta colors of Green, Blue, and Yellow are analogous (next to on the Color Wheel) to Yellow and Blue, Green and Purple, and Orange and Green respectively.  Consider planting them with their analogous colors!

You may also plant them with different shades, shapes and textures of their own colors of Green, Blue, and Yellow (called Monochrome designing).

To learn more about designing a garden using colors, visit our Color Wheel Gardening Information page.

Are you looking for a specific size for your garden?

Have a large space to fill?  We sell Giant Hostas, Large Hostas, and Medium Hostas.   Have a small corner to tuck a little plant into?  We also offer Small Hostas and Mini Hostas.

Planting a variety of sizes adds sculptural depth and interest to a garden design.  Contrasting sizes can add more informal tension or anticipation, while complementary sizes can be restful and create more formal shapes.

How fast do you want your hostas to grow?

We offer hostas with Fast Growth Rates, Moderate/Medium Growth Rates, and Slow Growth Rates.

In areas you would like to cover quickly, a fast-growing variety may be a good choice.  However, the faster your hostas grow, the faster they will need to be divided if placed in a small space.  This will result in more plants for you;  but if you want to avoid garden maintenance, faster is not always better!

What kind and quantity of light do you have in the area?

We do not recommend planting hostas in deep, dark shade.  Most hostas prefer partial shade; either dappled all-day shade or morning and evening sun.  Afternoon sun (Especially in the South) is frequently too intense for hostas.  Some hostas tolerate more sun, and some can handle full sun in Northern areas.  HostasDirect sells some varieties of Sun-Resistant Hostas.

To learn more about hostas and sun, please visit our Hostas and Sun Information Page.

Do you have frequent slug, deer, or rabbit visitors?

We offer Slug-Resistant Hostas, which are frequently more distasteful to deer and rabbits as well.  No plant is deer or rabbit proof, but some are less likely to be eaten.

Often, hostas with rough textures or thick leaves discourage any animals from munching on them – they feel weird in their mouths, are more difficult to chew/swallow/digest and might not taste as good.  They will want to look for other options!

Are you looking for fragrant flowers?

HostasDirect has varieties of Fragrant Hostas.

Many hostas have quite large, deliciously fragrant blooms!  All fragrant hostas have some H. plantaginea species lineage, making them more or less heat and sun resistant!  The degree of resistance depends on how closely related they are to H. plantaginea.

Not sure which hostas to buy together?

Our staff frequently puts together Hosta Bundles and Hosta Trios as groups of hostas that complement each other.

While hostas are often grouped by sun tolerance, size, and color, the sky’s the limit on hosta combinations!  Check our Hosta Blog and Hosta Bundles Page and/or sign up for our Email Newsletter to see and receive all our freshest recommendations for garden design!
