Details
Species: Heart-shaped, dark glossy green, tips twisted, vivid blue flowers. The only hosta that comes true from seed. Said to be tetraploid. First hostas brought to Europe H. plantaginea, H. lancifolia,H. sieboldiana and H. ventricosa, (1790). Named in Japan 'Murasaki Giboshi' or "dark-purple flowered Hosta". Ventricosa has always been considered near impossible to use as a pod parent for crosses. This is because it is said to be apomixic, which means it is not pollenated in the ordinary way. I don't know if scientific research has established this or if it is just a legend which has become established.
