Hosta pics - Deal #1 and Best
Value TC
One of you wanted to see more of a plant we are
offering in our special offer released yesterday.
We just photographed different views of H.
St. Paul. By the way, sales have
been brisk. This is a great deal
in every way.
St. Paul in a cell pack
You can see by looking at the ruler in the photo
that these plants are very mature.
This hosta is rated as a small/medium size -
so this is about as large as they get.
The roots are breaking through the cell packs
in some places and growing out of the bottom.
They are large and easy to unfurl.

Individual Best Value TC pic
The bluish color on
some portions of the leaves are fertilizer.
Our suppliers have automated means of
applying water soluble fertilizer up to twice a day
in just the right amounts. You
can see the roots have not been unfurled yet - we
just removed it from the cell pack.
This is how the hosta looks when you first
receive them if you happen to get a hosta that is
slightly root bound.
Some nurseries can
sell terribly root bound plants so be careful.
They might grow and try to sell something one
year, then the next and then the next.
If you buy the tree or plant and put it in
the ground, it could strangle itself.

Best Value TC - roots unfurled
The vast majority
of the hostas we sell are not root bound.
However, here is an example of H. St. Paul
you saw in the previous pics that has the roots
unfurled. You can see the
length of the roots are 5 to 6" long and thick.
You can also see a
dormant bud that is swelling to create next year's
growth. It is in this area of
the plants where the meristem tissue is located.
This can be used by tissue culture labs to
propagate additional hostas - after hopefully
testing for diseases before
production. There are some labs
that don't test - we won't buy from them.
A hosta's growth rate is rated slow, medium
or fast. This rating has to do
with how many buds a hosta creates for next year's
growth.

Not every Best Value TC looks like this.
How could they? They are
all different and keep growing.
We sell them at various times of the year which
certainly impacts the size.
Some of our hostas in the early spring may not be as
big as hostas this time of year.
Minis will never be large hostas.
What they become is in their genes and how
well you prepare their home, their location, and
their care.
