DEAL #2:

$25.00 Hosta "Grab Bag" offer:  save 30+ %

Each $25.00 "Grab Bag" will contain at least $35 of hostas based upon our regular internet prices.   We will select a group of at least 5 different plants with a total value of at least $35 from our inventories.

You save AT LEAST $10 on these quality hostas.

This time of year we often find ourselves with too much inventory or too little inventory on many varieties of hostas. We also have some that have outgrown their cell packs because they are slightly root-bound (it takes about 1 to 5 minutes to untangle the roots but the roots are huge and it is worth the time and effort!)  To solve this problem we came up with a "Grab Bag" offer which we feel will be good for everybody.

You can buy other hostas if you wish at our regular price.  All orders apply towards our normal additional free hosta program for every $50 incremental purchase.  Orders are filled on a first to buy basis.

***This Grab Bag offer will exist until our inventories are balanced***

Hosta Diseases - avoid an expensive heartache

I am not saying this because we sell disease-free Best Value TC hostas that have never touched the ground but because many people do not know what a bummer it is to get a disease in your garden.  As you read these, keep in mind that hostas are a low maintenance, easy-to-grow, basically disease free plant.   But, all living things can be prone to illness.

Imagine this:

  1. Digging up and disposing your favorite hostas and their surrounding soil

  2. Using Zerotol (a very expensive chemical that can burn your skin) to kill nematodes

  3. Having containers full of bleach around your gardens to sterilize your feet and tools so the worms or Virus X won't spread

  4. Worrying and being bummed out

Hosta Virus X - know what it looks like and what to do!  Click here!

I just went on a garden tour HostasDirect helped sponsor for www.Fraser.org.  Fraser is a wonderful organization that serves a wide variety of human needs.   Please check the link and consider giving!  I walked into a beautiful garden and saw a full blown case of Hostas Virus X!   I showed the sick plant to three Master Gardeners and none of them knew what it looked like.   Thus, I thought I better do my part to educate our readers.

Foliar Nematodes -  microscopic worms   Click here!

Foliar nematodes are just starting to show in Minnesota.  You can see unsightly white or brown tissue damage in between a hosta's veins.  They are already visible in the south.

The best thing to do is prevent these diseases.
Know where your plants come from - if they are gifts from a friend or plants you purchase.   Purchase from reliable, licensed, and knowledgeable nurseries.   I am not trying to scare you - there are many great nurseries and people out there - I am trying to prevent you from having an expensive heart ache.
  • Walk your garden frequently to see if there are any diseases starting and take action fast!

  • Study what the various diseases look like.

  • Use bleach and water to sterilize your tools and shoes when you work in the garden.

  • Realize that diseases can be spread by animals, birds, excess water, etc

Minnesota Hosta Society Cut Leaf Show:

Various local hosta societies around the country and the American Hosta Society national convention sponsor "Cut Leaf Shows."   Participants cut their finest hosta leaves and bring them to the shows for judges to evaluate.   Winning leaves are displayed in a very professional, well-named fashion that are easy to view and photograph.   Here are some the pics from this past weekend's show!  Talk about living art and living sculpture!
