Luster is the sheen, shine, or patina of a leaf. One of the fun thing about hostas is they have different lusters, again depending upon their genetics, growing and light conditions. The American Hosta Society has categorized hostas by the following:
- Dull: does not reflect light so well
- Glaucous Bloom: having a waxy coating (or bloom) producing a white to blue coloring over the plant parts.
- Opaque:
- Shiny: reflects light
- Slightly Shiny: reflects more light
- Very Shiny: reflects a lot of light
- Waxy: has a lot of wax on the leaf
