This is a very important category that many hybridizers are trying to develop in their hostas. It can be defined as the thickness between the veins of a leaf. Increased substance (thickness) can increase the likelihood that slugs will not eat holes in the hosta leaves. Although we are not saying this is factual, it has been reported also that foliar nematodes have a harder time spreading as they can not make their way through the thick leaf.
