Hostas can vary in slug resistance. Slugs are the tiny snail like creatures that can eat often unsightly, small to large holes in plants, including hostas. Due to genetics and hybridization, many hostas have thicker leaves than other hostas which seem to prevent the slugs from being able to eat holes in those leaves. Hybridizers are attempting to develop hostas with thicker leaves for a variety of reasons, including slug resistance and appearance. In our opinion, purchasing hostas with thicker leaves is a good idea!
