Petiole Shape
The shape of the petiole (stem) is another important characteristic that can
make a hosta more attractive. Hosta petioles are not always plain and straight
but have textured structure. We categorize the petiole shape by:
- Arching: Petioles which arch in an upwards direction
- Cupped: Petioles can be cupped in a rigid form
- Flared: These hosta petioles have edges which are splayed outwards.
- Grooved: Petioles have a dent or groove which run down the petiole
- Ridged: Petioles with a fine ridge along the petiole
- Semi-circular: Hosta petioles which edges which curl around into a round
shape
- Twisted: Hosta petioles which acan spiral in a corkscrew-like shape
- Winged: Petiole has "wings" which look like the leaf continues down the
sides of the petiole
