Fragrant
Some hostas have fragrant flowers. Of the 40 or so species plant that evolved native in eastern Asia, only
one, h. plantagenia, from eastern China, is fragrant. This is also the first
hosta brought back to Europe. The well loved, h. plantagenia, (also known as
plantain lily), is the parent plant of any hosta that are fragrant. As it h.
plantagenia evolved in warmer climates in China, this plant and some of its
offspring also do the best of all hostas in southern climates. As the “parent
plant,” the fragrance of plantagenia is the strongest compared to other fragrant
hostas. But, most have a very pleasant fragrance and can lighten up a room or
garden!
